Do you know what the name is for verbs that are modified because they are being acted on a second person? Like your doing them on/for someone else? For example 웃기다, 울리다, 재우다, 먹이다? I’m hoping to find a standard rule for going from one form to another i.e. 먹다 -> 먹이다 but can’t figure out where to look without a name. Thanks so much! And thank you even if you don’t have an answer, your blog is really helpful!
Hi! I believe they are called causative verbs. There are some general rules about which suffix to use depending on what letter the original verb ends with, but there are many exceptions and sometimes you just have to memorise them! Here’s a good list of the rules from TTMIK.
전체 = the whole (of)
그는 건물 전체에 페인트칠을 했다 = He painted the whole building.
소문이 회사 전체에 퍼졌다 = The rumor spread all over the company.
산 정상에 오르자 도시 전체가 내려다보였다 = When I reached the top of the mountain, I could see the entire city below.
전부 = all
전부 합쳐서 얼마예요? = What do you charge for them all together?
그의 말은 전부 거짓말이다 = Everything he says is a lie.
내게는 그녀가 전부다 = She is everything to me.
내가 할 수 있는 일은 전부 해 보았다 = I have tried everything that I’m capable of.
때리다 = Hit, beat, strike
그는 자신의 아이를 때린 혐의로 체포되었다 = He was arrested for beating his child.
나는 그의 뺨을 때렸다 = I slapped him across the face.
그가 어디를 때렸니? = Where did he hit you?
데리다 = Take, bring, pick up
7시에 데리러 갈게요 = I’ll come to pick you up at seven.
나는 여동생들을 데리고 연극 관람을 갔다 = I took my younger sisters to see a play.
부인과 아이들도 데려 오세요 = Bring your wife and children, too.
오늘 친구를 한 명 함께 데려왔어 = I brought a friend along today.
