~만에 = after, at the end of, in, for the first time in…

(focuses on the amount of time which has lapsed, refers to something which had also happened before in the past)

오랜만이야! = It’s been a long time! (long time no see)
1년 만에 좋은 친구를 만났어요. = After 1 year (interval or lapse), I met my good friend (again).
3년 만에 한국어를 공부했어요. = (After 3 years (break), I studied Korean (again).

십년 만에 처음으로 참여하고 있었다. = He was participating for the first time in ten years.
20년 만에 온 가장 추운 날. = the coldest day in twenty years
그는 5년 만에 권력을 장악하였다. = He climbed to power in 5 years.
3개월 만에 상처는 완치되었다 =

At the end of three months the last bandages were removed.
부자가 20년 만에 대면했다 = Father and son met after twenty years’ separation.
한참 만에 만나는군 = It has been a long time since we met.
104년만의 최악의 가뭄으로 인해 한참 동안 전국이 몸살을 앓았다. =

The worst drought in 104 years has plagued the country for quite a while.

크리스는 한 시간 만에 돌아왔다. =

Chris came back after an hour.

간 = Time period, for, during

이건 몇년간 연습한 결과입니다 = This takes years of practice.
저는 지난 3년간 서울에서 살았습니다 = I’ve been living in Seoul for 3 years.
일주일간 머물다 = Stay for a week
그를 몇 달간 만나지 못했다 = I have not seen him in months.

중국의 춘절은 15일간의 공휴일이다 = The Chinese New Year is a 15-day holiday.

The space between, among

우리는 로마와 파리 간을 매일 두 차례 운항한다 = We fly between Rome and Paris twice daily.

두 사물 간의 차이 = a difference between two things

부모 자식 간에도 예의는 지켜야 한다 = Even in a parent-child relationship, there needs to be mutual respect.
직원들 간의 버스 이용이 잦아졌다 = Bus use is increasing among the staff.
어떤 가정도 가족 간의 화합 없이는 행복할 수 없다 = No family can be happy without harmony among its members.

누구든 간에 = Who/whomever (out of anyone)

어떻든 간에 = Whatever it is
일어나든지 간에 = Whatever happens

걸리다 = to take (time)

시간이 오래 걸리진 않을 거예요 = I don’t think it’ll take that long.
집에서 회사까지 버스로 30분 정도 걸린다 = It takes about 30 mins from my place to work by bus.
이 일을 끝내려면 며칠 더 걸릴 것 같다 = I think it will take a couple more days to finish this.
대전은 차로 2시간 정도 걸린다 = Daejeon takes about two hour’s by car.
얼마나 걸릴까요? = How long will it take?
거기까지 가는 데 얼마나 걸려요? = How long will it take to get there?

~ㄴ/은/는 데 = place/location that..

데 = place/location like in 아무데나 (anywhere) and 아무데도 (nowhere). Don’t get this mixed up with ~ㄹ 때 or ~는데.

혹시 가고 싶은 데가 있어요? = Do you want to go anywhere? (do you have a place that you want to go to?)
돈이 없어서 갈 수 있는 데가 없었어요 = He had nowhere to go because he had no money
우리가 처음에 만난 데에 갔어요 = We went to the place that we met for the first time
그녀가 사는 데는 조금 멀어요 = The place that she lives is a little far.
앉고 싶은 데 아무 데나 앉아라 = Sit wherever you like.

~ㄴ/은/는 데 = The time/money/energy/etc. it takes to do something

제가 우리 집에서 친구의 집까지 가는 데 5분 걸렸어요 = It took 5 minutes for me to get from my house to my friend’s house
여기까지 오는 데 시간이 많이 걸렸어요 = It took a long time for me to come here
밥을 다 먹는 데 1시간 걸렸어요 = It took an hour to eat all the food
집을 짓는 데 돈이 많이 들었어요 = It cost a lot to have this house built.
그렇게 큰 박스를 드는 데 사람 2명이 필요해요 = It takes two people to lift that

하루 (One day, a day)

하루에 세 번 = three times a day
나는 하루에 8시간 일한다 = I work eight hours a day.
하루만 더 시간을 주세요 = I need one more day, please.
나는 하루에도 생각이 수십 번 바뀐다 = I change my mind dozens of times a day.
요즘은 하루도 조용한 날이 없다 = Lately, there hasn’t been even one day of quietness.

이틀 (Two days, a couple of days)

방학이 이틀밖에 안 남았다 = There are only two days left until vacation.
책을 다 읽는 데 이틀이 걸렸다 = It took two days for me to finish the book.
그는 떠난 지 이틀만에 집으로 돌아왔다 = He returned home two days after he left.
우리는 이틀에 한 번 꼴로 야근을 한다 = We work overtime about once every two days.
이 케이크 이틀 됐는데 먹어도 괜찮을까요? = This cake is two days old. Would it be safe to eat it?

사흘 (Three days)

결혼 날짜를 사흘 당기다 = shift the wedding date three days ahead
사흘 동안 연야 계속 작업하다 = work for three consecutive nights
사흘간만 쓸 건데요 = I’ll only need it for three days.
사흘 동안이나 바람이 불어제쳤다 = For three days the wind raged incessantly.

며칠 (A few days, several days; How many days?)

며칠이 평생같다 = A few days is a lifetime.
저희는 며칠 전에 여기로 이사 왔어요 = We moved here a few days ago.
그는 며칠 뒤에 떠나 = He’s leaving in a couple of days.
생리가 며칠 늦어지네 = My period is a few days later
며칠 동안 머무실 예정입니까? = How many days will you be staying?

몇 시예요? = What time is it?

시 = hour
분 = minute
반 = half (half an hour, 30분)
정각 = sharp, exactly, on the hour

저는 매일 아침 9시까지 출근해요. 퇴근은 보통 6시 30분에 해요 – I get to work by 9 every morning. I usually leave work at 6:30.
내일 수업이 4시 반에 끝나요 – My classes finish at 4:30 tomorrow.
12시 정각에 – at 12 o’clock sharp
오늘 몇 시에 친구를 만나요? – What time do you meet your friend today?
아침 7시 지하철 2호선은 전쟁터예요 – At 7 o’clock in the morning, subway line number 2 is a battlefield.
버스는 매시 정각에 출발한다 – The bus leaves every hour on the hour.
회의는 정각 10시에 시작되었다 – The meeting began promptly at 10.

A~ㄴ/은 지 B 됐다 – I’ve been doing A for B amount of time

한국에 온 지 2년 됐어요 – I have been in Korea for 2 years
여자 친구랑 사귄 지 6개월 됐어 – I have been going out with my girlfriend for 6 months
밥을 먹은 지 5분 됐다 – I have been eating for 5 minutes

얼마나, 오래 – how long? for a long time?

한국어를 공부한 지 얼마나 되었어요? = How long have you been studying Korean?
운동한 지 오래 됐어? = Have you been exercising for a long time?

얼마 안 되다 – haven’t been doing for very long

제가 한국에서 산 지 얼마 안 됐어요 = I haven’t been living in Seoul for very long
제가 우리 학교에서 일한 지 얼마 안 됐어요 = I haven’t been working at our school for very long

정도 – degree

can replace 만큼 when not attached directly to a noun

~(으)ㄹ 정도(로) – to the degree, extent, point that

밥도 못 살 정도로 가난해요 = He is poor to the degree that he can’t even buy rice
죽을 때까지 믿을 수 없을 정도로 저를 배신했어요 = He betrayed me to the degree that I can’t trust him for the rest of my life
이 케이크는 제가 매일매일 먹을 수 있을 정도로 맛있어요 = This cake is delicious to the degree that I could eat it everyday
제가 표현할 수 없을 정도로 학생들에게 감동을 받았어요 = I’m impressed from the students to the degree that I can’t express myself

그 정도는(/가) 아니에요 = Not that much/Not to that extent/Not to that degree

그 남자를 죽을 만큼 사랑해요? = Do you really like that man (to the extent that you’re going to die?)
그 정도는 아니에요 = No, not that much (not to that extent)

우리가 이 일이 이미 끝났다고 할 수 있는 정도가 아니에요 = This work isn’t at the point (degree) that we can call it finished already
이 병이 나빠지는 것은 많이 걱정해 야 하는 정도가 아니지만 오늘부터 치료를 시작해 야 됩니다 = The disease/sickness getting worse isn’t (to the extent that it is) something you need to worry about it, but we need to start treatment (from) today

정도 – about

우리는 아직 40분 정도 가 야 돼요 = We still have to go about 50 minutes
사람 10명 정도가 수업을 들을 거에요 = About 10 people will take the class
그 책은 만원 정도입니다 = That book is about 10,000 won

어느 정도 – to a certain degree/extent

저는 그 사람을 어느 정도 믿어요 = I believe that person to a certain degree/extent
그 학생은 영어를 어느 정도 잘 할 수 있어요 = That student can speak English to a certain degree
