멘트 

The word 멘트 comes from the English ‘announcement’ (or perhaps comment, statement, or mention) but is used in a variety of context to mean “the way s/b talks” (speech, words, comment, expression, script, statement, etc.) Sometimes has the negative connotation of words that are not true or natural. First used in the broadcasting industry but now widely used in daily life.

방송멘트 = broadcasting jargon
뉴스멘트 = news jargon

기내멘트 = the way airhosts talk
판매용 멘트 = marketing phrase/statement
작업용 멘트, 데이트용 멘트 = pick-up lines
따뜻한 멘트 = warm comments
그냥 멘트야 = it’s all talk 
리드멘트 = leading(preceding) statement

~았/었어 보다 = Slang meaning ~았/었다고 쳐보다, ~했다면 (suppose you had.., imagine you had…, consider if you had…, if you had..) 

만약에 너가 나한테 잘했어 봐. 그럼 내가 걔랑 만났겠어? = Suppose you had treated me better. Then do you think I would’ve met her? 
만약에 니가 공부를 더 했어봐 그럼 시험에 떨어졌겠어? = Imagine you had studied more, would you have failed the test then??

~(어/아) 가지고 (causal relationship, colloquial, only used in speech and not writing)

1. Because, since, so (cause and effect, similar to ~아/어/여서)

바빠 가지고 지금 갈 수 없어요 = Because I am busy I can not go.

어제 늦게 끝나 가지고 집에 못 갔어요 = Because I finished late yesterday, I couldn’t go home
오늘 날씨가 너무 더워 가지고 약속을 취소했어요 = Because the weather is so hot today, I cancelled my plans
우리가 너무 일찍 와 가지고 오랫동안 기다렸어요 = Because we came so early, we had to wait for a long time

Some more pessimistic/realistic slang/신조어, related to work:

메신저감옥 – “messenger prison” – that feeling when you’re hostage to the work messages coming in on your Kakao after hours. 

월급로그아웃 “salary logout” – when your wages are gone the minute they hit your account because of all the payments you have to make.

사축 “company livestock” – a play on “가축” (livestock). workers whose companies treat them like livestock.

실어증 – literally means aphasia, but now a play on words meaning “일하기 싫어하는 증세” ie the Monday blues, workitis.

야근각 – that feeling where you know you’re going to have to work overtime.

Explanations:

  • 츤데레: Tsundere, just like the english equivalent has a strong association with otakus.
  • 세젤예: Short for 세상에서 제일 예쁜.
  • 꽃길만 걷자: Metaphor used to mean 좋은 일만 생기기를 바란다 | let’s hope we just have good times.
  • 혼술: Short for 혼자 마시는 술, also used to refer to the action of drinking by yourself.
  • 걸크러쉬: Girl crush. In my experience mostly used to refer to girl that seem cool and strong. The girl they drew encapsulates this pretty well.
  • 넌 is 뭔들: 넌 뭘해도 예쁘고 잘 어울린다. 너라면 뭔들 좋지 않겠냐. So basically to say “you’re perfect”. I’ve seen the altered version 치킨 is 뭔들 used more often.
  • 이불 밖은 위험해: Self explanatory, was a big meme in winter, kind of died down now that it’s summer. 
  • 심쿵: For 심장이 쿵 내려 앉을 정도로 설레다. Hard to directly translate in english, but “the feeling of getting hit by eros’s arrow” matches pretty well. This one is a bit old but still used.

재미없을 줄 알아 = You’ll regret it, You’ll be sorry, It won’t be fun for you

내 말 안 들으면 재미없을 줄 알아  = If you don’t listen to me, you’ll be sorry.

하라면 해! 안 그러면 재미없을 줄 알아! = Do what I say! or else!

너 자꾸 이러면 재미없을 줄 알아! = If you keep up like this it won’t be fun for you! 

국물도 없을 줄 알아 = (Same meaning, but more jokey) 

“인호, 너! 그러면 나중에 국물도 없을 줄 알아.” 
“엥? 뭔 국물?” 
“흥! 네가 매형 될 사람의 능력을 잘 모르는 모양인데, 지금 잘못 보였다간 나중에 후회할 줄 알아.”

Explication: 

  • 티끌 모아 티끌: reference to the korean saying 티끌 모아 태산  meaning “ gather specks of dusts and you will have a big mountain”, similar to the english “ Penny and penny laid up will be many”. Except they change it to gather specks of dust and you’ll still have just specks of dust. 
  • 맛있으면 0칼로리: straight forward, if it’s tasty it’s 0 calories. 
  • 낄끼빠빠: short for 낄때 끼고 빠질 때 빠져라. Means something similar to “stay in your lane”. Know when to you can participate and when you should just leave it.

~다고 노래를 부르다 = Sings a song that goes~, sings that~ (When someone says the same thing repeatedly so it starts to sound like a song. e.g. your friend always talks about how much she loves her boyfriend, so you tease her by saying she’s ‘singing a song’ about it)

아이스크림 먹고 싶다고 하루 종일 노래를 불렀더니 엄마가 사줬어 = I sang a song saying ‘I want to eat ice-cream’ all day so my mum bought me some.  
선풍기를 사주면 좋을 것 같아. 걔가 덥다고 덥다고 노래 부르니까 = I think we should by him a fan. He’s always singing ‘it’s hot it’s hot’.    
동생이 항상 여행가고 싶다고 노래를 불러 = My sister is always singing about wanting to go on holiday.
여자친구가 항상 다이어트해야 한다고 노래만 불러 = My girlfriend always just sings that she wants to lose weight.
얘가 여자친가 보고 싶다고~ 보고 싶다고~ 노래를 하더라 = He’s always singing ‘I miss my girlfriend~ I miss her~’.
