My reading and writing are so slow. Wishing i had spent more of my free time reading and writing, for both korean and just for my life!

I realised this week that my Korean improvement has pretty much reached a complete standstill, and i’m not at the level i hoped i would be at this time last year. I haven’t properly sat down and studied for a long time, but i think that’s what i need to take my Korean up from intermediate to advanced. this is the first time i’ve ever used textbooks to study and it’s definitely harder to motivate my self to work through a textbook than to just study whatever catches my fancy online. Once I get started on the books they are still enjoyable though, so no more excuses, time to study.

Haenggung-dong Mural village(행궁동 벽화마을) starts right outside the gallery, so for people who like art this makes a lovely place to start a day out. Haenggung-dong Mural village is also quite small, but there are still a lot of very nice murals. If you’d like to visit a larger mural village then Jidong(지동벽화마을) might be better, but since this is right next to Hwaseong Fortress(화성행궁) it’s easy to walk to various different sights within a short time.
For some reason it’s hard to find art exhibitions in Suwon. So, after going to Jidong Mural Village(지동 벽화마을) we stopped in at this small gallery in Haenggung-dong Mural Village, Alternative Space Noon(대안공간 눈). The building is painted beautifully with its own murals and inside there are 4 small exhibition rooms, so although it’s not large it does display a variety of different collections.

Went to the seoul international book fair and got new books to read once i finish 미움 받을 용기. Found 지적 대화를 위한 넓고 얕은 지식 thanks to the recommendations by @koreangrumblings and ttmik. I decided to get the second one because it includes philosophy and art, but not sure if that’s a good choice because the whole point of studying more is that i need to build vocab on subjects im Not interested not those that i already know. Ive only flipped through it but it looks like a challenging read. I hope its not too difficult. I know nothing about the other book i just picked it up because it looked interesting at the stall, ive been wanting to read some korean feminism, and i wanted the free bag they were giving away with it 👍
First bamboo forest, First time meeting the parents
Last May I travelled outside of Gyeonggido for the first time, and met my boyfriend’s parents. It was our first time in Gwangju so we didn’t really know what to do. In the end we decided to go the bamboo forest close by in Damyang(담양 죽녹원).
It was a scorching hot day, so we thought it would be nice to talk a walk in the cool shade of the forest. Alas that is not what we did. We realised it as soon as we arrived: Is this…. a mountain? It’s a mountain. The weather was so hot it felt like death, but we started off on our walk.
Children’s day weekend 2/2)
On Saturday we rented a car and drove from Gwangju(광주) to Boseong(보성) to visit the green tea fields(녹차밭) and Yulpo beach(율포해숙장). We got stuck in traffic, again, leaving Gwangju(광주) and had to squeeze our plans for the day into a much shorter time than expected, but as soon as we got on the road to Boseong the way was really clear and the surroundings beautiful. That drive through the mountains was the most healing part of our weekend and has pretty much prepared me for anything that comes my way this month. The Korean countryside is undeniably beautiful, and whether it be by car, bus, or train, looking out the window on a long drive here has become one of my favourite things since the day I arrived on the plane and made the journey from the airport to my home in Suwon.
See pictures and read rest of the post on our lovely weekend trip 🙂
Children’s Day weekend ½)
‘Golden week’ was a blessing. After a stressful time with work and school and an even busier month up ahead (this is my final and most difficult month of uni), having a few days off to travel gave me some much need refreshment.
On Friday we caught the bus to Jeonju(전주) to visit the Hanok Village there (you’re probably bored of posts about hanok villages, right? I promise this is the last one!). Lots of people recommend Jeonju as a good place to visit so I’ve been wanting to go for a long time and it really was a beautiful place.
