통역 = interpretation, translation (of languages, spoken not written)

동시통역 = simultaneous interpretation

그는 통역 없이 미국인과 이야기했다 = He talked with an American without an interpreter.
그는 장관급 회담의 통역을 맡았다 = He worked as an interpreter for ministerial-level talks.

이제 vs. 지금

이제 and 지금 both translate to “now” in English, but they have slightly different meanings in Korean.

이제 has more of a meaning of “from now on,” as in now and the time going forward (now compared to before now).

Ex. 저는 이제 대학생이에요. I am a college student now.

지금 means right now or at this moment.

Ex. 지금 뭐 해요? What are you doing right now?

이제 시작할 수 있다 = We can start now (that everything is ready/from now on/now that we finished preparing/etc.)

안심 = relax, relief, feel at ease

안심하기에는 아직 이르다 = It’s still too soon to relax.
나는 그 소식에 안심이 되었다 = I was relieved at the news.
이제 안심해도 된다 = You can relax now.

당신이 있으면 안심이 돼요 = I feel safe with you.
그녀의 어머니는 그녀를 안심시켰다 = Her mother reassured her.

안도 = relief

그녀가 떠나자 모두들 안도의 한숨을 내쉬었다 = We all breathed a sigh of relief when she left.
네가 무사히 도착했다는 말을 듣고 안도했다 = I was relieved to hear that you had arrived safely.

진하다 = Strong, rich, thick (액체 (liquid), 빛깔 (colour), 화장, 냄새, 맛)

진한 커피 = Strong coffee.
국물이 너무 진한 것 같다 = I think the soup is too thick.
진한 갈색 = dark brown
화장을 진하게 하다 = wear heavy make-up
꽃향기가 진하다 = The flowers smell strong.
그녀는 언제나 진한 향수 냄새를 풍긴다 = She is always giving off a strong smell of perfume.

독하다 = Potent, strong (맛, 냄새, 술, 약)

이 독한 냄새는 뭡니까? = What is this pungent smell?
그는 수년간 독한 술은 입에도 대지 않았다 = He hasn’t touched a strong drink for years.
그 칵테일은 상당히 독하다 = The cocktail is pretty potent.
이번 감기는 정말 독하다 = This is a nasty cold.

형편 = (personal) circumstances, conditions

형편이 허락되면 = if the circumstance allows
나는 가정 형편 때문에 학업을 포기했다 = I dropped out of school due to family circumstances.
저는 당신을 도울 형편이 못 됩니다 = I’m afraid I’m in no position to help you.
전 집을 살 형편이 안됩니다 = I can’t afford to buy a house.
형편이 좋다 = to be well off
요즘 형편이 좀 폈다 = I’m better off these days.
그녀는 전보다 형편이 더 어려워졌다 = She is worse off than before.
