Why am I still making this mistake? I can’t believe I’m revising stuff from level one but:
~에 = at
(있다/없다/살다/~고 있다/~을 수 있다/많다), to (가다/오다) ~에서 = at (other verbs), from
(가다/오다)
한국에 왔어요 = I came to Korea. 대만에 살고 있어요 = I’m living in Taiwan.
영국에서 왔어요 = I am from the UK.
어디서 오셨나요? = Where are you from?
집에서 일해요 = I work at home. 서울역에서 만나요 = Let’s meet at Seoul Station. 스타벅스에서 만나자! = Let’s meet at Starbucks!
그들은 한국에서 유명하다 = They are famous in Korea.
~에 여행가다 = travel to ~에서 여행하다 = travel in ~에 도착하다 = arrive at ~에서 출발하다 = depart from 중에= during (time) 중에서 = among (nouns) 지난 주에, 다음 주에, 오전에, 오후에
~치고(는), 치곤 = Considering, when it comes to (noun), among, as for (noun), for a (noun) (noun is an exception or is without exception)
그 여자애는 15세치고는 꽤 성숙하다 = The girl is very mature for a fifteen-year-old. 마리아는 외국인치곤 한국어를 너무 잘한다. = Maria is very good at Korean for a foreigner. 시설이 작은 도시치고는 뛰어나다 = The facilities are excellent for a small town 요즘 여자치고 식스팩을 다 좋아한다. = As for women, they all like sixpacks. 비밀치고 탄로 안 나는 것이 없다. = When it comes to secrets, there is nothing that doesn’t come to light. 사람치고 결점 없는 사람은 없다. = No one is without his faults. 한국에 온지 얼마 안 된 것치고 한국말을 잘 하는 편이다.= You speak Korean well considering you haven’t been in Korea for long.
~끼리 = (only) among, between, with
우리끼리만 놀았어 = We hung out only amongst ourselves. 친구끼리 비밀이 있어? = Are there secrets between friends?) 가족끼리 여행 갈 거야. = I’m going to go on a trip with my family members only.
우리끼리 마시는 게 훨씬 편했다. = It was far more convenient to drink just among ourselves. 우리끼리의 이야기지만… = Between you and me… 친구끼리 싸우는 것은 좋지 않다 = You should not quarrel between yourselves.
간 = Time period, for, during
이건 몇년간 연습한 결과입니다 = This takes years of practice. 저는 지난 3년간 서울에서 살았습니다 = I’ve been living in Seoul for 3 years. 일주일간 머물다 = Stay for a week 그를 몇 달간 만나지 못했다 = I have not seen him in months.
중국의 춘절은 15일간의 공휴일이다 = The Chinese New Year is a 15-day holiday.
The space between, among
우리는 로마와 파리 간을 매일 두 차례 운항한다 = We fly between Rome and Paris twice daily.
두 사물 간의 차이 = a difference between two things
부모 자식 간에도 예의는 지켜야 한다 = Even in a parent-child relationship, there needs to be mutual respect. 직원들 간의 버스 이용이 잦아졌다 = Bus use is increasing among the staff. 어떤 가정도 가족 간의 화합 없이는 행복할 수 없다 = No family can be happy without harmony among its members.
누구든 간에 = Who/whomever (out of anyone)
어떻든 간에 = Whatever it is 일어나든지 간에 = Whatever happens
중에(서) = among, between, in the middle
중 = centre, middle 중학교 = middle school 중식 = formal name for “lunch” 회의중 = middle of the meeting
이 책하고 저 책 중에서 = Between this book and that book
이 세 개 중에서 = Among these three things 나의 남동생 3명 중에 그는 가장 똑똑해 = among all my younger brothers, he is the smartest 나의 친구들 중에 나는 슬기를 가장 좋아해 = among all my friends, I like Seulgi the most 내가 가 본 곳 중에 미국은 가장 무서웠어 = Of all the places I’ve been, the US was the scariest
사이에서 = among (people)
사이 = space between
친구들 사이에서 인기가 많아요 = He is popular among friends 이 가수는 한국인들 사이에서 인기가 많아요 = This singer is popular among Koreans
사이에 = between, physical space between objects or people
은행하고 공원 사이에 있어요 = I am between the bank and the park 약국은 학교하고 경찰서 사이에 있어요 = The pharmacy is between the school and the police station 나는 그와 탁자를 사이에 두고 앉았어 = I sat across the table from him. 커튼 사이로 햇빛이 들어왔어요 = Sunlight shone in through the curtains.
자동자 위에 있어요 – It’s on top of the car. 책상 위에 컴퓨터가 있어요 – The computer is on the desk. 소파 위에서 자고 있어요 – i am sleeping on the sofa
아래/밑: under
자동자 밑에 – Under the car 책상 아래 (밑에) 구두가 있어요 – The shoes are under the desk. 나무 밑에서 책을 읽고 있어요 – i am reading a book under a tree.
앞: in front of
자동자 앞에 – In front of the car 책상 앞에 의자가 있어요. The chair is in front of the desk. 친구를 어디에서 만날 거예요? – Where are you going to meet your friends? 은행 앞에서 만날 거예요 – I will meet them in front of the bank.
뒤: behind, back
책상 뒤에 책장이 있어요 – The bookshelf is behind the desk. 자동자 뒤에 있어요 – It’s behind the car
옆: beside
자동자 옆에 – Beside the car 책상 옆에 화분 하고 옷걸이가 있어요. The coat hanger and the plant are beside the desk.
왼찍: left
책상 왼찍에 화분이 있어요. The plant is to the left of the desk.
오른찍: right
책상 오른찍에옷걸이가 있어요. The coat hanger is to the right ofthe desk.
사이: in between, among relationship or the space between certain objects or people
에 – objects 화분과 옷걸이 사이에 책상 있어요. The desk is in between the plant and the coat hanger. 은행하고 공원 사이에 있어요 – I am between the bank and the park 약국은 학교하고 경찰서 사이에 있어요 – The pharmacy is between the school and the police station
에서 – people
친구들 사이에서 인기가 많아요 – He is popular among friends
이 가수는 한국인들 사이에서 인기가 많아요 – This singer is popular among Koreans.
가은데: in the middle of
책상 가은데에 인형이 있어요. The teddy bear is in the middle ofthe desk.
중: among, between 중 – center, middle
에서, not locative
Between A and B – A하고 B 중에서 이 책하고 저 책 중에서 – Between this book and that book
