1. Because, since, so (cause and effect, similar to ~아/어/여서)

바빠 가지고 지금 갈 수 없어요 = Because I am busy I can not go.

어제 늦게 끝나 가지고 집에 못 갔어요 = Because I finished late yesterday, I couldn’t go home
오늘 날씨가 너무 더워 가지고 약속을 취소했어요 = Because the weather is so hot today, I cancelled my plans
우리가 너무 일찍 와 가지고 오랫동안 기다렸어요 = Because we came so early, we had to wait for a long time

2. After doing.., Having done… (colloquial expression of “having done something” is similar to -ㄴ/은 후에 and

~아/어/여서

불어를 공부해 가지고 프랑스에 살고 싶어요 = After studying French I want to live in France.
은행에서 돈을 찾아 가지고 나가겠어요 = After withdrawing money from the bank, I will go out.
한국어를 배워 가지고 한국 회사에 취직하겠어요 = After learning Korean, I will get a job in a Korean company.
공부를 해 가지고 와 = Come after you study.

(후 means after. 그 이후로, 저는 하나도 기억나지 않아요. =

After that, I don’t remember much at all.)

나는 모임에 가입한 이후로 다른 사람이다. = But I’m a different man since I joined group.

내가 태어난 날 이후로 = Since the day I was born.

그때 이후로 줄곧당신이 불평하는소리를들었다 = And ever since then I’ve listened to you complain.

그때 이후 그것은 점점 더 유명하게 되었다. = Since then it has become more and more popular.

그 이후로 뭘 하고 계신가요? = What have you been doing since then?
그날 이후 나는 그를 본 적이 없다 = I’ve never seen him since that day.

그는 학교를 떠난 이후로 은행에서 일해 왔다. = He’s been working in a bank since leaving school.

이래(로) = Since (not commonly used!)

(이래 means down)

응, 우리가 고등학교를 졸업한 이래로 15년이 흘렀지. = Yes, it’s been 15 years since we graduated from high school.

내가 그걸 적은 이래로 수년이 흘렀다 = It’s years since I wrote it.

내가 3살 이래로 = Since I was three years old.

~고 나서 – after doing, having done
(meaning similar to -ㄴ/은 후에)

저녁을 먹고 나서 신문을 읽어요 = After eating dinner, I read newspapers.
읽고 나서 숙제를 해요 = After reading, I do my homework.
숙제를 다 하고 나서 친구에게 전화를 걸어요 = After doing all the homework, I call my friend on the phone.

~(으)ㄴ 다음에 (다음 – next time, next, 다음 주 – next week)
~(으)ㄴ 후에 (후 – after, 오후 – afternoon)
~(으)ㄴ 뒤에 (뒤 – behind, back, 등 뒤 – behind the back)

편지를 받다 = to receive a letter
편지를 받은 다음에 = after receiving a letter
집에 간 뒤에 = after going home
책을 읽은 후에 = after reading a book
점심을 먹은 다음에, 도서관에 갔어요 = after having lunch, I went to the library
영화 본 다음에 우리 커피 마셔요 = after watching the movie, let’s drink coffee
이거 한 다음에 뭐 할 거예요? = after doing this, what are you going to do?
그거요? 이거 한 뒤에 할게요 = that one? I’ll do it after I do this
