(focuses on the amount of time which has lapsed, refers to something which had also happened before in the past)
오랜만이야! = It’s been a long time! (long time no see)
1년 만에 좋은 친구를 만났어요. = After 1 year (interval or lapse), I met my good friend (again).
3년 만에 한국어를 공부했어요. = (After 3 years (break), I studied Korean (again).
십년 만에 처음으로 참여하고 있었다. = He was participating for the first time in ten years.
20년 만에 온 가장 추운 날. = the coldest day in twenty years
그는 5년 만에 권력을 장악하였다. = He climbed to power in 5 years.

~에야, ~에서야, ~서야 = Only when, only at
이미 정오가 가까운 시각에야 = Only when it started to approach midday…

나는 그날 아침에야 출근하면서 넌지시 운을 떼었다. = That morning, finally, as I was leaving for work, I piped up.
이제서야 당신이 작가로서 인정을 받나 보군요 = It looks like you’re finally being recognized as a writer
그 결과는 몇 주 후에야 알게 될 것이다 = The result will only be known several weeks hence.

~어야만 = Only if (~어야 reinforced by ~만)
우체국에 와야만 걸 수 있는 전화니까 = It’s a phone call you can only make if you came to the post office…
사람은 늙어야만 죽는 줄 알았는데 = I thought people only died if they are old.
학생은 교사의 허락이 있어야만 교실을 떠날 수 있다. =
Only if a teacher has given permission is a student allowed to leave the room.
~어야만 한다 = Absolutely have to/must (emphasised form of ~어야 한다)
그렇게 매일 같이 마셔야만 해요? = Do you really have to drink like this every day?
난 좋든 싫든 그것을 해야만 한다 = I must do it whether I like or dislike it.
그게 내가 해야만 하는거 아닌가? =
Isn’t that what I’m supposed to do?

4. ~밖에 못 했다 is more precise than ~만 했다
5. 보는 것이 좋았다 = I liked seeing something. 봐서 좋았다 = Seeing something made me happy. 보기 좋다 = something looks good/is pleasant to look at.
6. ~는 것만으로 instead of ~는 뿐으로.

재미있게 공부하기만 하면, 한국어 잘할 수 있어요 = As long as you study Korean in a fun way, you can become good at Korean
비밀을 지키기만 하면 안전해요 = As long as you keep the secret, you’re safe.
음식이 맛있고 직원이 친절하기만 하면, 식당은 언젠가 유명해져요 = As long as the food is good and the staff are kind, a restaurant will get famous one day.
~(느)ㄴ 한 = within the boundaries where you do.. (very formal not common in conversation)
제가 열쇠를 가지고 있는 한, 아무도 못 들어가요 = As long as I have the keys, no one can go in
살아있는 한, 저는 계속 공부를 할 거예요 = As long as I am alive, I will keep studying.
~지만 않으면 = only if you don’t do..
너무 춥지만 않으면 갈게요 = As long as it’s not too cold, I will go.
사람들이 너무 많이 오지만 않으면 괜찮아요 = As long as not too many people come here, it’s okay.
깨지지만 않으면, 계속 쓸 수 있어요 = As long as it’s not broken, you can keep using it.

공부만 하다 – to only study
(noun form of word 기) ~만 하다
듣다 = to listen
듣기만 하다 = to only listen
듣기만 했어요 = I only listened (I didn’t talk)
보다 = to look
보기 = looking
보기만 하다 = to just look
보기만 할 거예요 = I will only look (and not touch)
