다 V-고요 is an easy little grammar point used to express surprise over an unusual occurrence.

I have a friend who is chronically late to every meet up we have.  If, one day, she manages to arrive at the meeting spot early, I could say to her, “일찍 다 오고요!”  Note that the verb is never conjugated in past tense with this grammar.

This grammar is often used with expressions of surprise such as 웬일이에요?, 무슨 일이 있어요?, and 왜 그래요?

Examples:

웬일이에요? 밥을 다 사고요.  (Implication being that they never cover a meal.)

무슨 일이 있어요? 지각을 다 하고요.  (Implication being that they are never late.)

왜 그래? 갑자기 공부를 다 하고.  (Implication being that they never study.)

The following further examples are from 건대 한국어 3:

웬일이야? 네가 나한테 전화를 다 하고.

오늘 좋은 일 있나 봐요? 화장을 다 하고요.

*웬일이세요? 이렇게 일찍 출근을 하고요.

*무슨 일 있니? 먼저 만나자고 하고.

*다 can be omitted without any change in meaning.

Hey I love your blog!!! Can I ask you a question?? I’m confused when some Koreans use the starting forms of the verbs like just 하다 instead of 합니다 or 해요. Could you say when they use that kind of sentences?? Thank yoouu ^^^

다 – all, completely

다 주세요 = give me all of it
다 했어요 = I’ve done all of it
다 왔어요? = are we there yet? did everybody come? (did we all come? did we come to all of it?)

다 살 거계요? = are you going to buy all of it?

커피를 마시다 = to drink coffee
커피를 다 마시다 = to drink all of the coffee
다 has more influence on the verbs than on the nouns, so think of it as an adverb (it is ‘drink all’ instead of ‘all the coffee’)

책을 읽다 = to read a book
책을 다 읽다 = to read all of the book, to finish reading the book.

책 전체 = the entire book

전화 다 했어요? = did you finish talking on the phone? did you make all the calls? did everyone make a call?
준비 다 했어요. = I finished the preparation, I did all the preparation, all of us are prepared

덜 – not fully, not completely (yet)

그 맥주 다 마셨어요? – Did you drink all of that beer?
아니요. 다 안 마셨어요. 덜 마셨어요 – No, I didn’t drink all of it. I haven’t finished it yet.

덜 왔어요 – We are not there yet
제 책 돌려주세요 – Give me my book back.
아직 덜 봤어요 – I haven’t finished it yet.
