Grammar: ~다고 치다
~다고 치다
‘suppose that’
A way of presenting a hypothetical situation.
~이라고 가정해 보다 Is another longer way to say the same thing.
It is often used together with 설령, 가령 at the beginning of the sentence to stress that the situation is hypothetical (like saying ‘what if’)
그 말이 맞다고 쳐요
so, let’s say you’re right.
가령 다리가 부러졌다고 치자
let’s suppose that you do break your leg.
엄마, 혹시나 해서 물어보는 건데,
누나가 저 샘이랑 사귄다고 쳐. 그래서 결혼을 했다고 쳐.
그런데 내가 저 샘 여동생이랑 사귄다고 쳐. 그래서 나도 저 샘 여동생이랑 결혼한다고 쳐. 그럼 엄만 어떻게 할 거야?Mom, just asking hypothetically but what if 누나 ends up dating that teacher. And let’s say they get married. And then I end up dating that teacher’s younger sister. And then I get married with her. What would you do?

I got a few anons over the past few months about my music projects, so if you’re interested please sub to our new youtube channel. 🙏 We’re going to be uploading covers, official live videos, music videos, etc all here – right now we only have a live video from Jarasum Festival up which wasn’t miked so the sound quality isn’t as good as what we’ll eventually be putting up. It would mean a lot to me if you subscribed or even if you just shared this post!
@piecesofmyseoul @seoulsenghwal plz share this too 💖
Hey im also a beginner to Korean and i was wondering how did you learn vocabulary, im finding it really difficult to remember it
personally, i learn best through application. words i see my friends use more often/words i use more often tend to stick very fast. so its a little bit of a struggle when im learning a word like 지진 or 익숙해지다 which dont show up as commonly for me. but memrise helps (…if i keep up with it) and i do writing practices (will do more in future) where i try to incorporate these words and apply them.
i do make my own memrise sets of words i either come across (i scroll through old texts and pick out words i dont know), topik in 30 vocab, or just basic everyday words. for now, i (will) use daily korean vocab for foreigners pdf in order to build a stronger foundation of basic words, and continue using my topik in 30 days int. vocab as well.
writing words you dont know while watching dramas or listening to sounds can help too and viki even has a new system for some dramas that show eng subs and kor subs at same time (only on computers). always double check with naver dic or another application about the meaning. dont learn anything wrong its painful to undo.
to be honest for vocab, memorization, application, and using context clues is key:
1. memorization/context- learn the word itself, its spelling, and definition. remember a lot of words are based on context too. try to see all the different ways the word can be used.
2. application- use this word in more circumstances and see how it is supposed to be conveyed with certain grammar/meanings.
3. using context clues- figuring out the meaning of one word by way of knowing background info and the rest of the sentence.
ex: 어제 여친과 싸웠는데 얘기한 후에 화해했다.
i learned the word 화해하다 because i understood the rest of the sentence.
TIP: do not bother translating kor to eng when reading things. it will not help you. it usually doesnt make a lot of sense either? just read it as you should you’ll process things faster and it’ll just be a whole lot better for the future.
창덕궁 후원/비원 | Changdeokgung Palace Secret Garden
한국의 좋은 점 중에 하나는 대도시에도 나무, 공원, 산 등이 많다는 거예요. 사람과 자동차, 인공적인 빛, 소리가 많은 서울에서도 평화로운 자연을 만날 수 있는 곳이 많아요. 그 중에 창덕궁 비원(Changdeokgung Secret Garden)이 아주 좋아요.
One of the great things about living in Korea is that even in big cities there are so many trees, parks, mountains, and other green spaces. Even in Seoul, with all the people, traffic, lights, and noise, there are many places to enjoy the peace of nature. Changdeokgung rear garden, or ‘Secret Garden’, is a lovely one of those places.
Korean On the Internet
ㅂㅁㄱ or 병먹금 are short for 병신에게 먹이 금지 and are an internet slang meaning “to ignore mean persons/idiots”.
Some people engage in 어그로 (Aggro, short for Aggravation), a behavior in which they are being disrespectful in order to bring the attention to themselves. You should just 병먹금 these people.
So now I know the Korean for “don’t feed the trolls”.
Bodacious Terms
This time we look at phrases that come from right under our noses.. literally (excluding the face ones.) ANYWAYS.. We’ll look at some idioms that refer to our bodies. As always, these terms don’t have direct translations, so I wrote some examples down to help understand their uses.
Let’s dive into it!
얼굴이 두껍다 – Shameless, brazen
회사에서는 얼굴이 두꺼워야 해. 전날 싸우고도 계속 같이 일 해야 하니까 – You have to act brazen at a company. Even if you fought the day before, you have to keep working together.발이 넓다 – Friends in many places (large reach)
잭은 발이 넓은것 같아. 모든 나라에 친구들이 있더라고. – I guess Jack has friends in many places. He seems like he has friends in every country. (Creative, right!?)손이 크다 – Positive: Openhanded, generous / Negative: Excessively giving, buying, or making.
폴은 사업가라 손이 크던데요? 선물용 홍삼을 몇백만원치 사더라고요. – Paul is a big spender. It seems like he bought several thousand dollars worth of ginseng.쑤의 어머니는 손이 크셔서 집에 놀러갈때 마다 부침개를 열장씩 부쳐주셔. – Sue’s mom is so generous. Every time I visit their house she makes me ten Korean pancakes.
엉덩이가 무겁다 – Positive: Tolerant, enduring / Negative: Lazy
한국에서는 학생한테 이런 말을 많이 한데 “학생은 엉덩이가 무거워야지.” – In Korea there’s a saying that “students must endure.”필은 부르면 한번에 안 나와. 한 열번은 불러야 나와… 내가 아는 사람중에 제일 엉덩이가 무거워. – If you call Phil once he won’t come out. You have to call him several times… He’s the laziest person I know.
간이 크다 – Courageous (can be negative or positive)
간이 큰건지, 죽고 싶은건지, 어떻게 총을 든 강도한테 덤빌 수 있어? – Are you brave, or do you want to die? How could you attack a robber with a gun?입이 무겁다 – Tight lipped (opposite is 입이 가볍다)
제가 믿을 수 있는 사람은 송이밖에 없어요. 송이는 입이 무겁거든요. – There’s no one I trust more than Songi. She’ll never tell anyone.귀가 얇다 – Easily persuaded
귀가 얇아도 너무 얇은거 아니야? 왜 맨날 생각이 바뀌냐? – Aren’t you a little too easy to persuade? Why do you change your opinion every day?Hope these were interesting, and there always many more that we can dive into! So if you liked this post, please let me know ^^ More to come soon! (I promise)
